Rend Lake

Rend Lake is close to home. Although we have camped around the lake a couple times, this isn’t a area that we know well. We took a recent weekend to stay at South Sandusky Campground to be tourists about forty minutes from home.

Rend Lake, the second largest lake contained in Illinois, is an Army Corp-managed Lake. As we’ve come to expect with Army Corp Campgrounds, the sites where large and level. A multi-use path ran through the campground, and we enjoyed biking and running on the trail. We were fortunate to also enjoy a great night sky, with a great glimpse of the milky way and a nice way to end a late summer evening.

We spent Saturday in Benton IL, about 15 minutes from the campground, and experienced great new places. We had a fantastic lunch at Seasonings Bistro and good coffee at The Buzz. We also had a couple nice beers at The Hop Brewery in nearby Christopher IL.

Overall, camping at South Sandusky on Rend Lake was a beautiful and relaxing spot where we could be tourists in our own back yard.
