Old Stone Fort

On our way to Georgia, we made an overnight stop at Old Stone Fort State Park, in Manchester TN., south of Nashville. Contrary to our expectations, Old Stone Fort isn’t a fort at all, but rather a Native American religious site. ​

Old Stone Fort is on a peninsula, surrounded by the Duck River and Little Duck River. The stone and earth wall is a few feet tall over the steep banks of the rivers. A hike takes you on a 1.5 mile loop either above or below the wall. Below the wall you’ll find great views of the river, including several waterfalls that made the area a destination for mills in the 1820’s. Above the wall you’ll find a prairie-like environment, standing in contract to the trees, rocks, and rivers below. 

The campground is on the opposite side of the river. It’s about 50 sites that are large with nice restrooms available. This was a good recharge and made the coming travel day easier.
