We set a goal: camp in all twelve months in 2018. We pulled of January - no sweat - a unusually warm and sunny weekend and we had no scheduling conflicts. February wasn’t so easy. We had a conflict every Friday and the forecast wasn’t great. But there was a shimmer of hope: a three day weekend. After attending a Chamber dinner Friday night, we checked the forecasts again Saturday morning and saw that Memphis was forecasted to be dry on Sunday and Monday. We then looked for a campground. Finding the right campground in the winter is tricky: the nice private campgrounds offer fewer amenities and activities in the winter, but few reduce their rates. The public campgrounds often close or offer no water and facilities - all of which pose a problem with the Cricket. We found a good choice: Meeman Shelby Forest State Park. Meeman is located north of Memphis, about 35 minutes from downtown, really about 30-40 minutes from most Memphis attractions. This is an older state park and it’s showing its age. However, the campsites are nice. They are water and electric, with picnic table and fire ring, and is covered in tall trees just off the Mississippi River. We got settled Saturday afternoon and found our way to Central BBQ. We've tried a handful of BBQ joints in Memphis, and like them all, Central BBQ is one of our favorites and we enjoyed a rack of dry ribs and wet wings. On our very first camping trip, in September 2015, we visited Memphis and discovered Shelby Farms Park. At that time, a lot of the park was under construction, but we remembered a great place. Now the park is complete and it offers 45 miles of paved and single-track biking, lakes with paddling opportunities, a bison herd, and tons of great green space. We rode one of the loops, decided against the single track after seeing serious mud, and headed on a lake loop. Shelby Farms could easily fill a day of exploring and this may be our favorite Memphis attraction. Memphis for biking and BBQ works for us as a perfect two or three day getaway.
