Is Cricket Camping now Mantis Camping? We loved our Cricket, so why the change? We had our 2015 TAXA Cricket for over three years and spent about 160 nights in it, for an average of about one night per week. In all of our time owning the Cricket, we only didn’t camp in four of the 38 months we had it. No doubt about it, we loved the Cricket and used it a lot.
So, why the change? Several factors made upgrading to the Mantis really appealing. We are excited to have enough floor space that more than one of us can be in the camper and not in bed at a time. We are excited to have a little bit of privacy for the toilet and to have a shower. We are excited to have an integrated a/c and heater. We are excited to let the kids have a bit more space. Our kids are getting taller and older (10 and 12), and recently decided they didn’t like the cots so much anymore. We’ve set up a tent for them a few times this spring which is a fun novelty, but not what we want to do every time. We’ve also had a few instances of rain or cold weather and we had no place to stay in and play cards or hang out, so we instead had to seek out an indoor activity. We had battles over floor space and conflicts over privacy. We think the Mantis is a solution for these challenges. There are attributes we will miss. Having a blue and orange camper is a unique and fun conversation starter at the campground. Although we are likely to still have the funkiest unit in the park, it’s less colorful. We already miss the ease of towing, refueling and parking. The Mantis feels massive in comparison. We will miss the flexibility of the Engel fridge/freezer as well are the rear hatch. Without a doubt, the Cricket is extremely cool, flexible, and functional. The things we loved about the Cricket helped to sell us on the Mantis. We never seriously considered another unit or brand without a TAXA badge. TAXA isn’t flawless, but they build a smart camper with quality construction and components that work for our family. The debate rages at our dinner table if our domain name and Instagram handle needs to change, but we all agree, the 2019 TAXA Mantis is a positive change for the Cricket Camping family.
